With floating structures, wind power can expand at scale into far deeper waters, often further from shore, opening up sizeable new markets globally. In the UK, Scotland has particularly deep waters which offer the ideal location for floating offshore wind. This opening session will explore the huge global opportunity floating offshore wind presents, and how the UK can best capitalise on its remarkable strengths in geography and offshore expertise to be a leader in this growing sector. We will also look at the opportunity floating wind could offer to the UK’s Industrial Strategy.

The supply chain is critical to delivering our floating wind ambitions, and there is clearer than ever direction from both central and devolved governments to maximise local content and spread prosperity to all parts of the country. This session will explore the most important challenges and opportunities facing the various tiers of firms actively supplying and servicing, or seeking contracts with, the floating offshore sector. Where are the most fruitful links to be made between offshore renewables and the UK’s well established oil and gas supply chain? Is the UK supply chain growing in line with project development?

Floating offshore wind is a global opportunity with huge potential, and this session explores some of the exciting developments taking place across diverse geographies from Europe to the Pacific coastlines of North America and Asia. In examining what’s happening elsewhere in the world we can identify not just places where we can learn lessons but also places where we have the potential to grow new export routes and markets. Where does the UK sit in the global race to develop and commercialise floating offshore wind? What are the lessons that can be learned from developing and operating in different regulatory regimes and technical environments around the world?
