From BETTA to EMR
Our electricity network has undergone some significant change in recent years. This session will help set the context for the seminar by providing delegates with a short history of some of the key changes that have helped shape the system that we are familiar with today. We will look at what we want from our energy system, the role of the network, and importantly, how we should pay for it.

Q & A
Transmission Network Charging
The transmission network is often considered to be the backbone of the electricity system acting like a highway and taking electrons from one part of the country to another. This session will consider how that role has changed.
In addition we will look at the roles and responsibilities of the parties tasked with operation and ownership and consider how the costs of the system are recovered.
Speaker
Rob Marshall, Charging Development Manager, National Grid

Distribution Network Charging
Where the transmission network is seen as a highway, the distribution network can be considered to act like A & B roads, taking power from the main system to our homes and businesses. However a number of innovations in the way that power is produced, and advances in storage technology could mean that this model is a thing of the past.
This session will explore the changing role of the distribution network looking in detail at the commercial arrangements in place to dictate ownership and operation while considering if they remain compatible with the energy system of the future.
Speakers
Paul McGimpsey, Scottish Power Energy Networks
Sorcha Schnittger, Project Delivery Manager, Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks
Industry Experience
The renewables industry has already changed the way that power is generated and transported across the network. This session will explore if the industry can do more for the system by moving from traditional ‘plug and play’ arrangements and look at opportunities to provide more than active power in more innovative and collaborative ways.
Speaker
Joseph Dunn, Grid & Regulation Manager, ScottishPower Renewables
