The UK Government has today (April 7) published the Second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2) shortlist, with 27 projects advancing to the next stage of the government’s flagship hydrogen programme. Eight of these projects are based in Scotland.

Green hydrogen is produced by using renewable energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, resulting in a zero-carbon fuel that can be used as it is needed for power generation, transport and industrial processes.

With a significant pipeline of offshore and onshore renewable energy in Scotland, green hydrogen also has the potential to play an important role in our need for energy storage.

Colin Palmer, Director of Offshore at Scottish Renewables, said:

“The Second Hydrogen Allocation Round is a significant milestone for the future of green hydrogen with eight projects in Scotland taking a massive step closer to becoming operational.

“This investment is a positive signal of intent from the UK Government, providing much needed certainty for developers and building confidence that UK hydrogen has a pivotal role to play in our efforts to tackle climate change.

“These projects will not only help cut carbon emissions but deliver economic growth and a wide range of jobs for apprentices, graduates and technically trained professionals, such as engineers, welders and skilled construction workers, to support a clean energy transition.”
