Cruachan Power Station

Pumped storage hydropower stations like Cruachan allow energy produced when it's not needed, for example by wind farms or nuclear power stations during the night, to be stored for long periods.

Excess electricity is used to pump water uphill to a reservoir. When needed, the pumps are reversed and the water flows downhill through them to once again generate electricity.

Renewables360 allows you to step inside the turbine hall hundreds of feet underground, then take a stroll along the dam high up on the mountain.

Systems like Cruachan will be vital in a net-zero energy system. In fact, a massive expansion of the site is currently slated.
